First Edition Publications can print your publication in a variety of formats and sizes.

Book sizes

The most popular sizes for commercial and private publication are:

Novel	6 x 9"	15.24 x 22.86cm

Crown Quatro	7.44 x 9.68"	18.91 x 24.59cm

Please note that there will be a different minimum number of pages for each of the above book sizes and that the total number of pages will always be a multiple of four.

Binding

Documents can be bound in a number of ways according to the number of pages in the document and the format of the document.

Popular examples in paperback format include:

Saddle stitching: Staple binding which may suit publications of up to 40 page A4 size

Perfect binding: Suitable for a “paperback novel” style book of up to 400 pages in the popular 6” X 9” format.

Coil binding is also an option for all publication sizes. This is a popular option for business proposal documents and dissertations.

Hard back: First Edition Publications can also offer a hardback option complete with a dust jacket. The minimum number of pages in a hardback format is 96. In this format, pages will be bound in sewn sections which will then be glued together into the spine for extra quality and added strength. This is an ideal format for the publication of a thesis.

Irrespective of your choice, First Edition Publications can advise clients on all the binding options available for their particular choice of document format.

Cover design - Artwork:

All document front and back covers can be printed in full colour at no additional cost to the client.

Where a client already has a cover design to hand or in commission, First Edition Publications can advise on the exact dimensions necessary for their chosen format.  Alternatively, First Edition Publications can provide graphic design support services for an agreed, additional fee. Where this is the case, clients will be required to provide a clear design brief in terms of the overall theme of the design.

Colour Options:

First Edition Publications can offer a wide range of colour options. The most popular format for books – the 6 X 9 “novel” paperback format, includes a full colour front and back cover (including spine). The book interior itself is in black and white but a colour option is available at extra cost - this can be quite significant.

Alternatively, First Edition Publications can offer an A4 option in full colour throughout or a colour front/back cover with black and white content. The full colour throughout option is popular with our corporate customers who require business reports, feasibility studies, business plans, marketing plans or annual reports. This is also a popular option for dissertations.

Photographs and line drawings:

With most popular word processing programmes, it is possible to insert scanned images (photographs and/or line drawings) into the text. These will, of course, be included in the final print job. But don’t forget that if you choose a colour cover together with a colour interior, your photographs and line drawings will be reproduced in full colour.
Photographs need to be scanned at 300dpi for best results.
However, if you choose a colour cover and a black/white interior, your photographs and line drawings will be reproduced in black and white despite the fact that such content will appear in colour in your base document.
